30th April - Ground frost last night. Sunny intervals, light N, 11C

The male Grey Wagtail was still collecting food for its nestlings.

26th April - mostly sunny, light NE, 14C, chilly first thing.

This morning a group of adult 7 Starlings were feeding together on the pasture.

A Grey Wagtail was collecting food.  The Goldcrest was singing again in its usual area.  Four Goldeneye were still present on the water.

Saturday, 24 April 2021

24th April - chilly night. SUnny, 17C, light ENE

Rutland Water; I decided to visit here after looking locally as they have had a good run of migrants in recent days.  In all a good selection of birds were seen during the visit.

The principle rarity present was a 1st winter Bonaparte's Gull, this showed well on lagoon 4 and was very active, not settling still hardly at all.  At least 20 Little Gulls were also present here. Waders here included Grey Plover, Bar-tailed Godwit, Dunlin, Avocets, Greenshank (2), Redshank and Whimbrel.

A pair of Grey Partridges were on the track near the far gate whilst a Cuckoo kept flying on and off the fence onto the lagoon bank.

Ducks included a female Scaup, two Wigeon, Goldeneye and a female Pintail.  Plenty of Common terns were around.

Stanford reservoir;  about 1505h two adult Little Gulls were spotted, by 1530h there were 5.  A passage through the Midlands reported today.  They always stayed centrally in the reservoir, so distant record photos.

Also noted were a Lesser Whitethroat, three Whitethroats, Treecreepers at two locations, a singing Goldcrest behind the dam and 12 Yellow Wagtails on the dam/spillway.

Common butterflies were out today - Small Tortoiseshell, Brimstone, Peacock, Speckled Wood.

Thursday, 22 April 2021

22nd April - frost last night -2C. Sunny, light E, 15C

The dry mon th continues, with frosts, warming quickly, but cooling early with the N/E winds seemingly slowing arrival migrants in numbers, but some exceptional early records too.

Cotesbach Landfill; another look here this evening.  the three Egyptian Geese wandered across the sandy area, promptly sat down and went to sleep.  A Common Sandpiper was feeding around the waters edge.  Both Teal and Shoveler numbers have dropped again, 11 and 6 respectively, soon they will all be gone.  The Gadwall pair were present again and two Mute Swans.  Six red Kites were still present circling over the boundary field.

I counted 10 Ravens. I watched one that stood statue like while another nibbled through its neck and breast feathers, at least for three minutes, clearly doing a cleaning job.

Wednesday, 21 April 2021

17th April - frost last night -2. Sunny, light NE, 14C

Cotesbach Landfill area; this morning three Egyptian Geese again, otherwise nothing new, although 10 Red Kites.  A little while after I had left Carl had Iceland Gull (2) and a Viking Gull so maybe next time.

Middleton Lakes RSPB; I pondered where to go this afternoon and decided on here, one aim to see the Cattle Egrets reported.  Then Egret were together in a Sheep field, busily feeding among the Sheep and lambs, they were showing well.

As soon as I had walked over the canal to the lakes area I immediately could hear a Bittern 'booming', this was a bonus as I don't think they are often heard here. In fact, it was heard from deep in the reed bed frequently during the afternoon.

Plenty of other birds to see around the lakes, several Cetti's Warblers were heard and Sedge Warblers too.  A single Yellow Wagtail was spotted, A couple of Avocet, three Black-tailed Godwits, several Redshank and Lapwings.  A good selection of Ducks including three Wigeon.  The Black-headed Gulls were very active in their nesting colony.

Friday, 16 April 2021

16th April - Frost again last night. cloudy mostly am, sunny spells pm, 10C, light NE

Willey; still only one Swallow around.  This high pressure has been sitting over us several days now ans with the N/NE wind direction clearly migration of many visitors have been slowed or halted.  Hopefully the next few days will see a change to this weather pattern.

Cotesbach landfill; a look around the area this evening.  A pair of Gadwall, and couple of Yellow Wagtails were notable, otherwise just the regulars.

Thursday, 15 April 2021

15th April - at lerast -2C last night. Sunny periods, light NE, 9C, feeling cool

Stanford reservoir; I had a walk here during the morning, the weather was not helping.  A Muntjac wandered along the path in front of me before heading off.  Warblers present were not singing much at all and other birds were keeping their heads down.

A Mallard with eight ducklings on the open water was see,  Also six Goldeneye and two Wigeon noted.

Barlestone; I visited an area next to the village this evening to catch-up with three Ring Ouzels which had been reported here during the day.  Viewing the field I soon spotted two and then a third Ring Ouzel.  They were busy feeding and did seem to mind activities going on around them (like the farmer feeding his Sheep), popping in to the hedge if needed, then soon out again.

Also in the area were at six Song Thrush feeding together, plus other nearby and two singing.  A good number of Blackbirds and a single Mistle Thrush.  A Greenfinch singing, also Stock and Collared Doves, Starlings collecting food/next material, a Sparrowhawk flew over.

Cotesbach landfill/Sandpit;  late morning.  a juv/1st winter Iceland Gull and juv Glaucous Gull were present for a while this morning.  The very bright sun, heat haze and distance prevented a good photograph of the Icelenad.

6th April - Sunny am, broken cloud pm with breeze sleet showers, mod NW breeze, 6C, but feeling (cold) like 2C

Most Gulls were distant on the tip area, though it does seem the number of Black-headed Gulls has dropped.  Still plenty of the larger Gulls though.
