30th April - Sunny, 25C, light SE

Lilbourne Meadows; evening.

A Greenshank was in, plus a resident Redshank.
The Great White Egret was again present, along with a Grey heron and three Little Egrets.

15 Pied and two Yellow Wagtails.  A Green Woodpecker called.

Ducks included Gadwall, Teal Shoveler and Mallard.

A fox,,vixen, showed for a while, the birds were keeping a c;lose eye on it!

29th April - Sunny, light SE, 22C

Lilbourne Meadows; morning and evening

This morning I heard a Curlew and a Great White Egret was present (only my 3rd site record).  
Also unusual to see here was a male House Sparrow on the fence.

This evening a Ringed Plover was present, at last a passage wader, also only my 3rd April record for this species here.

Also unusually for Spring a Tufted Duck pair on the field flood pools. 

Fourteen Pied Wagtails and two Yellow Wagtails.





Stanford reservoir, evening.

On the dam were two Common Sandpipers and two Yellow Wagtails.  Seven Common Terns, very noisy around the rafts.   The female Goldeneye was still present. A single drake Shoveler.

The Cowslips are flowing very well this year.

A couple of Green-veined Whites were feeding on the Hawthorn.




Misterton; evening

A quick check here produced a male Grey Wagtail at the lake outflow.



28th April - Sunny, 22C, light SW

 Lilbourne Meadows; early afternoon.

Two Shelducks,  a Redshank, a Little Egret, a Yellow Wagtail and other regulars.

Cossington Meadows, evening

A visit mainly to see the Savi's Warbler which has been here a couple of days.  However,  it decided to become quiet and invisible, so over a couple of hours only brief views and snatches of song.  Need to try again!

While waiting a Cuckoo was singing, a Raven over with food, plenty of Cetti's activity and Common Terns fishing.  Warblers included a Garden Warbler and Lesser Whitethroat.  A very noisy Water Rail.

27th April - Sunny, 20C, light SW

 Visited Lilbourne Meadows and Shawell sandpit/landfill this morning but nothing new at either site.


Eyebrook reservoir; afternoon.

A  good selection of birds including -A Greenshank at inlet end, a Sanderling and two Common Sandpipers.  Great White Egret and three Little Egrets, two Oystercatchers, two Egyptian Geese. Red Kite and Buzzards around.  A couple of Whitethroats and Sedge Warbler singing.  A Yellow Wagtail.

26th April - mostly high blanket cloud, hazy sun a little, very light breeze, 15C

Welney WWT

A good selection of birds including-

Quite a few Whoopers around and a Berwick's Swan that has an injured wing.

Two Spoonbills, mostly asleep!  Little Egrets.

Black-tailed Godwits displaying and very active.  Avocets nesting. Redshank in territories.

c12 Wigeon still, plus Teal, Shoverlers, Gadwalls, Tufted Duck, Mallards a single male Pochard.

Quite a few Whitethroats.   Plenty House Sparrows and several Tree Sparrows at the feeders.









25th April - light E, sunny spells, 14C

Lilbourne Meadows - afternoon.

c15 Teal still, plus several Gadwall and Shoveler.  Otherwise, just the other regulars.

Stanford reservoir evening.

My firsts of the year for Cuckoo and Hobby. Both on the Leics side.

24th April - cloudy until late afternoon, then sunny. Light NE, 14C

Lilbourne Meadows, evening.

New bird in was a summer Dunlin, hopefully the beginning of the wader passage here, which is typical during the next 3-4 weeks for this site.

A Shelduck and Redshank.  Three Yellow Wagtails, Grey Heron and a Little Grebe.

23rd April - some nice steady rain through the early hours, ceasing about 0700h. Sunny spells, light-mod NE, 14C

Lilbourne Meadows;

I looked both early and late but nothing new, just a good selection of the expected species.  A drake Shelduck, two Little Egrets, a couple Yellow Wagtails etc

Stanford reservoir; late morning.

A couple of Black terns were reported, so I popped to have a look.  One had departed the other was still one was showing well.  Along with four Common terns, whilst watching these I noticed that, in fact one was different and was indeed an Arctic Tern, quickly followed bu another.  This was a bonus.  However a short while after I left more Arctics arrived, up to 28, and a little later 44 were reported.

22nd April - sunny periods, light SW, 15C

Soar Brook Lake; morning

Very little activity here, a couple of Cormorants and Red Kite over.  Seems to have lost some of its attraction currently.

Bittesby Country Park; morning

A good Skylark population over the meadows area, un fortunately no Whinchats today.

Lilbourne Meadows; evening

A Curlew was present for a while, calling quite a bit before flying off westward.

Two Yellow Wagtails, c10 Pied.  A Green Woodpecker calling.and a Shelduck again. Plus the recent regulars.

21st April - light rain until late afternoon. light SE, 14C

Bittesby Country Park; morning

A Whitethroat sang a little in the east side hedgerow - the only new sighting.

Lilbourne Meadows; morning

A Shelduck again, a Little Egret. three Yellow Wagtails.

A Linnet and fed-up  looking male Reed Bunting on the south side.



Stanford reservoir; afternoon.

Many Arctic Terns reported moving through the Midland, alas not one found here.

Warbler numbers are good now., Garden Warbler c6, Willow Warbler 3+, Whitethroat 3. Lesser Whitethroat 1.

Swallow, House martin and Sand Martin came in for a while.

A Redshank, a Common Sandpiper and single Meadow Pipit on the dam.

20th April - sunny periods, mod easterly, 15C, but feeling cool.

 Lilbourne Meadows, late afternoon.

6 Yellow Wagtails and c12 Pied Wagtails. A Redshank was feeding on the mud in the corner.  Three Little grebes seen, presumably we have two pairs again.  Plus the current regulars of late.

19th April - Cloudy, mod-brisk at time easterly, 14C, feeling cooler. Odd light shower

 Lilbourne Meadows; morning.

A drake Shelduck on the flood pools, another flew in, which was then chased by the first one.

A Swift -  my first of the year, probable year first for Northants.  Also, my earliest date ever, previous earliest was 25th April 2018.

Otherwise similar species to last visit.


Summer Leys NR, afternoon.

A Ringed Plover, several Little Ringed Plovers, four Greenshanks, a Black-tailed Godwit, Oystercatcher, two Whimbrel came in.  Seven Common Terns, Great White and Little Egret (2).

Teal, Shoveler, Gadwall, Wigeon (1f, 2m), Tufted, 

Garden Warble near car park,Green Woodpecker, Stock Dove.

18th April - cloud increased and winf mod-brisk SSE, 15C, but feeling cool. A light rain late afternoon.

Bittesby Country Park; afternoon

A male Whinchat top meadows area.  Plenty Skylark activity. 

An unexpected Snipe called as it flew from field vegetation and landed a further 40 m on.

Shawell Sandpit/landfill area;

18 Red Kites, Green Woodpecker calling, Gadwall pair, seven Teal, two Mute Swans.

Lilbourne Meadows;

Single Oystercatcher, Redshank, Little Grebe.  Several Teal, Shoveler and mallard.

Two Swallows, 5 Sand Martins and a House Martin.  Single Yellow Wagtail.

22 Starlings feeding/gathering food on the meadows.



17th April - sunny periods, 15C, light E

Stanford reservoir; evening

Three Goldeneye still present (1m, 2f).  A Whitethroat.

16th April - strong-gusty SW, 30-40mph, 15C, but feeling much cooler, sunny periods

Stanford reservoir; afternoon.

A quick check here in case some Terns had been blown in, but no.

A Common Sandpiper was on the dam.  Most other birds were doing their best to find shelter, about from the Great-crested Grebes which seemed oblivious to the rough conditions.

Lilbourne Meadows;  evening.

A good count of 14 Yellow Wagtails, also 12 Pied Wagtails.  Redshank pair, a drake Shelduck, c20 Teal plus Mallard, Shoveler and Gadwall.   A Little Egret, and two Swallows.

15th April - mostly cloudy, light Easterly, 14C

 Lilbourne Meadows; morning.

A single Shelduck, plus Gadwall, Teal, Shoveler and Mallard.

Three Yellow Wagtails, four Pied, a Little Egret and Grey Heron.

Great Spotted Woodpecker investigation the fence posts for food.

20 Starlings feeding on the meadow.


14th April - Broken cloud, 14C, light S

Lilbourne Meadows; evening

Nothing new.  Eight Yellow Wagtails were notable around the field pools.
Single Little Egret still.

13th April - high cloud, 14C, mostly light SW

Lilbourne Meadows, morning.

Two Yellow Wagtails, three Swallows, two Little Egret, two male Reed Buntings, a Kestrel and two Little Grebes.


Bittesby Country Park; afternoon.

10 Speckled Wood and one male Orange -tip.

Blackcap and Chiffchaff singing, two Stock Doves and a hunting Kestrel.  Several Skylarks on the meadows and cock Pheasants calling/display.

12 April - Sunny, high cloud increasing, 22C, light SE

 Burton Hastings; afternoon.

A male Ring Ouzel was reported this morning in a Sheep field near the canal.  I made it after lunch, only Gary Hobbs was present.  After watching the male for a sort while, and a male Blackbird collecting food for youngsters, I noticed another bird close by, which I soon realised was a female Ring Ouzel.  This had not been seen earlier by anyone.









Shawell Lagoons

Still 10 Lapwings present on the sand bar, plus a Cormorant, a Teal pair and Little Egret.  It is only my second record of Little Egret at this site.
