7th Dec - cloudy, light drizzle and some light rain during the day, light- mod SW 13C

Three WebS counts today-
Mere Lane Lake - held a few Gulls, Mallard, Tufted and Shoveler, plus four Little Grebes.
A Water Rail answered from the drainage pools.

Soar Brook Lake - a good numb er of Gulls, coming and going to the nearby pig fields.
Mallard and Teal, two Mute Swans (sadly a dead one too).

Stanford Hall Lake area - A Great Egret, Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, Tufted and Little Grebes.   Fewer Canada and Greylag Geese.
Red Kite over.

6th Dec - cloudy, light-mod S, light rain at times, 10C

A couple of WeBs counts today at the small sites produced a Water Rail at Magna Park lake.

Stanford Res; afternoon.

Nine Great Egrets, eight Grey Herons, and 3 Little Egrets.  Two Goosander and one Goldeneye.

c100 Fieldfares and c50 Redwings on the bushes.

A couple of Reed Buntingsn and Goldcrests, a Treecreeper on the water side willows.

5th Dec - cloudy, light rain at times, 8C

Willey; morning

a Green Woodpecker flew ij to the Church Horse Chestnut tree.  A single Stock Dove came to the paddock feed station.  
Redwings coming to the Church Yew trees and a few Fieldfares around the pasture behind .

3rd Dec - Early fog clearing quickly, sunny, light S, 9C

Lilbourne Meadows; afternoon.

As the other day, plenty of Wigeon and Teal on the flood pools, along with c100 Lapwings, Mallard, 8 Gadwall and Shovelers.   

Three Tufted Ducks on the island pond, a Little Egret flew over.

c100 Starlings in flocks on the pastures.

Eight Long-tailed Tits are the feeder.

2nd Dec - Sunny, light-mod S, 10C.

Willey; two Mistle Thrushes around the Church Yews at midday.

Shawell Sandpit/landfill; afternoon.

28 Gadwall, c 40 Teal, a few mallard and Tufted, Little Grebes, two Mute

C20 Red Kites and Ravens.

150 Great Black Black-backed Gulls, plus H, LBB, B-H and Common.

12 Stoc Doves and a few Redwings in the spinney.

Catkins are beginning to develop and to show.

30th Nov - frost -1C last night. Today sunny, light W, 7C

Lilbourne Meadows; morning

Two Buzzards, a Red Kite and a Kestrel.

c200 Wigeon and c100 Teal and three Gadwall and a few Mallard on the flood pools.

c 200 Golden Plover flying over, may have landed on the DIRFT development site. c 100 lapwings on adjacent arable field.  A Snipe flushed from the path.


Bittesby Country Park; afternoon.

Six Stone chats today, showing well on the vegetation.   Two Buzzard,, a Red Kite and Kestrel over.

I spotted three Woodcocks with the aid of a thermal camera.

A few Redwings and Fieldfare feeding on berries.

Plenty of fallen apples if the weather turns cold and an abundance of Sloes.

29th Nov - rain until mid day, then sunny spells, light-mod S-W, 8C

Willey; morning

c200 Starlings feeding on the top pastures first thing.

A steady flow of Redwings coming and going to the Church Yew trees for berries, also c10 Greenfinch.  

A male a female Black were in the church hedge and then lane hedge.




Stanford red; afternoon.

At 1310h the Glossy Ibis was in the field muddy gate area art the Welford road end, then flew behind the hedge to the wet ditch.  At 1613h it flew quite high SW over the dam end,presumably to roost.

Several Great and Little Egrets around again and Grey Herons.  

c100 Teal, also Shovelers, Pochards, three Goosanders and two Goldeneyes.  12 Lapwings were flying around the res.

A Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail and Great Spotted Woodpecker at the dam end.  A Cetti's Warbler was heard a the Welford road end, near the style in the waterside brambles.

28th Nov - cloudy, mod SW, increasing to strong/gust as rain from passes through mid-afternoon, 11C

Willey; morning

I discovered a hibernating Peacock butterfly in the wood heap, not fully 'asleep' as it opening and shut its wings.  Placed in a safe place for the winter. 

c40 Redwings and 5 Fieldfares along the old rail track, otherwise quiet around the area.

Shawell Sandpit/landfill; afternoon.

Not an awful lot of Gulls in, similar to last visit.

I counted 36 Gadwall, my highest site count, previous winter high was 22 on Nov 15th  and previous ever high was 32 on 18th Feb 2023.

Tufted numbers still low, c15, but 47 Teal and only one Shoveler.

Plenty of Kites and Ravens again, but too windy to count them properly.

27th Nov - cloudy, mod SW, 14C

Eyebrook res; afternoon.

Visited here to see if I could find the American Wigeon that has been present a few days, after a good search I found it with other Wigeon and Mallards north of the island.  It was showing well in the mid-distance and quite active in the duck flock.  Also, in this area was a juvenile Whooper Swan.

A few, c20, Golden Plover were at the inlet with Lapwings, more Lapwing at the island and bay shore.  Several Goldeneyes and Pintails were on the water.  

A Starling murmuration was noted over the Rutland side over the conifers, presumably dropping in to the reed bed over there.

1540h, 16 Long-tailed Tits flew along church lane hedge to paddock hedge.

25th Nov - -2C frost last night. Today mostly sunny,, 6C, 12mph, NNW.

Still only a few Redwings coming to the Church Yews, Holly tree and hedges along the church lane, 15-20.   Four Greenfinches coming and going too.

I noticed Carrion Crows taking Sloes from the same bushes where Starlings were feasting the other day.

About 60 each Starlings and Woodpigeons flushed from the pastures by overflying helicopter.

24th Nov - cloudy, with light rain/drizzle pm, light NW freshening later, 7C

Shawell Sandpit/landfill; afternoon.

With winter just around the corner it is close to the time for a 'white-winger', although very few have been reported elsewhere in the country so =far this autumn.  However, there has to be a first sometime, well fingers crossed.

170+ Great Black-backed Gulls, although numbers of other Gulls were comparatively low today.
35 Red Kites present, mainly over the land fill area. Plus Ravens around.

75 Teal, c 10 gadwall a drake Pochard, two drake Shovelers, a few Mallard and Tufted Ducks.  
Little Grebe numbers seemed lower than of late.

23rd Nov - Sunny, mod SW, 8C

Willey; a Red Kite over the fields to the east, 0830h.

Lilbourne Meadows; morning

Now the field flood pools have returned c150 Wigeon and c70 Teal are making the most of them, plus 55 Lapwings.
Two Ravens were around, also a Kestrel, a Buzzard and a Red Kite.

Stanford res; mid afternoon.

A look many around the inlet  area and Keepers Bay produced 6 Great and 5 Little Egrets.  A Few Fieldfares along the river buses.
A single Goldeneye, still plenty of Shoverlers and Teal.

21st Nov - frost lastr night -3C. Sunny.very light NW, 5C

Willey; late morning.  

I noticed c50 Starlings coming onto the Church Lane hedge, they were devouring Sloes as fast as they could. 
In the Church Yard hedge near the Yew trees a male Blackcap seemed to be enjoying the warmth from the sunshine.  A few Redwings were coming and going to the Yew trees for berries.

Draycote Water; afternoon.

I had hoped to see the Red-breasted Mergansers, but they were difficult to find.
Five each Goldeneye and Goosanders were spotted, otherwise plenty of the other expected ducks.  Cormorant numbers seemed quiet large, although I have no comparative count data, but I expected the low water has something to do with it.

A flock of c20 Linnets were present, looked like they were going to roost near the park area.

20th Nov - Sunny, light NW, 4C, chilly. Frost -3C last night

 Willey, two Red Kites drifted west along the long spinney.

Stanford res; afternoon.

In the inlet fields and around the res I counted 18 Great Egrets, probably more if a coordinated count was done.  However, it is noticeable that the number of Little Egrets has reduced, Grey Herons are still present 5+.

The usual Ducks, nothing new, including a drake and female Goldeneye.

Fieldfares seemed more abundant than recently.  A Raven over.

c50 and c20 Redwings in top fields/spinney area.

18th Nov - mostly clody, light N/NE, 7C

Willey; 0745 four ravens over low, eastward, calling.

Ash Tree farm, Bitteswell; afternoon.

A walk around the area.
A Raven Over, Mallards, heron and Canada Geese on the lake.  c12 Goldfinch and Bullfinch pair with Redwings and Fieldfares in bushes/hedges.  Single jay in the new plantation.

17th Nov - Sunny, light N, 8C

Stanford Reds; afternoon.

Nine Great Egrets, 3 Little Egrets and 2+ Grey Herons.
Three Goldeneye and two Goosanders, plus at least 60 each Pochard, Shovelers and Teal.

A few Fieldfare and Redwings around, a Green Woodpecker.  Two Cetti's Warblers near the dam. 
Kingfisher seen/heard several times, two grey wagtails.

16th Nov - sunny intervals, becoming cloudy, 9C, light NE

Stanford res; morning.

I arrived and heard the ringers had just caught a Fiercest, so I popped round to see it.  I think we have a good record of November records at Stanford.


c50 Fieldfares and a few Redwings around the hedges near the dam.  Several Reed Buntings in the orchard area,  A single Grey Wagtail on the dam. 
Three Goldeneye and Great Egrets spotted.
Otherwise similar to yesterday.

A Shaggy Inkcap beginning to fruit.



Bitteswell, Ash Tree Farm' Bitteswell; afternoon.

A Green Woodpecker, c50 Redwings and a few Fieldfares.  A Goldcrest, several Chaffinches and Goldfinches feeding in the trees.  Two Buzzards and a Red Kite over.

Two separate Woodcock flew from cover, both near the path edge.

A Little Grebe on the lake, had caught a small fish. Not sure if they are regular here as only just started to visit this site.

15th Nov - cloudy, light easterly, 10C. Misty and fine drizzle at times.

Shawell sandpit/landfill; morning

22 Gadwall, 56 Teal,  4 Shoveler, 3 Wigeon, 14 Mute Swans, Tufted and Mallards.

15 Red Kites and several Ravens.   c50 Redwings and 6 Goldfinches.  plus the usual Gulls.

Lilbourne Meadows; afternoon.

The flood pool area has been restored to about a third, the island pond is now full and the meadows have standing water areas after yesterdays rain.

Already a good number of Wigeon and Teal are on the flood pools and island pond c50 and 40 respectively.

c200m Starlings and c100 Black-headed and a few Common Gulls feeding on the wet meadows.

c 20 Fieldfares and a few redwings.

Stanford reservoir; afternoon.

Reservoir now full and overflowing, shoreline has gone.

Four great Egrets at the dam end.  Common Sandpiper feeding along the dam again.  

Four Goldeneye, plus the other usual Duck species.

Long-tailed Tit flock with a Goldcrest and Chiffchaff.

Grey Wagtail and Sparrowhawk sitting on the spillway fence.  Green Woodpecker heard.

14th Nov - steady/heavy rain all day, with a mod-blustery NE, 11C

A grim weather day, with little opportunity to get out anywhere.  At least 40-50 mm rain, feeling cold too.


That wet I even had a garden first - a Moorhen - probably from the village pond I would think.

13th Nov - sunny spells, v light SW, 15C - positively a lovely balmy day (ahead of a wet front tomorrow!)

Willey; a Buzzard and Red Kite over about mid-day.  A Sparrowhawk shot through about 1000h.

Soar Brook Lake; late morning.

Plenty of Gulls are now visiting, or resting on the adjacent fields as the local farm has moved the pig fields much closer, Gulls can be very attracted to these fields where the pigs are fed and rooting up the ground too.
c200 Lesser Black-backed, c50 Black-headed and c10 Herring, with much coming and going of other between here and the pig fields.

Six Cormorants on the lake is quite high for here.

Stanford Res; afternoon.

A couple of Chiffchaffs, a Cetti's Warbler sang, two flocks of Long-tailed Tits.
A female Goldeneye, a Goosander (f/imm), c35 Teal, plenty Shovelers and Pochard still.
15 Great Egrets and plenty Little Egrets.
A few Redwings and Fieldfares and a single Meadow Pipit.

A Common Sandpiper, first spotted this morning by Chris, still present on the dam.

12th Nov - mod rain am, drizzle/spots rain pm, light S, 14C

Willey; surprised to find a Hedgehog out side my back door at 1800h.  Adult size.


Hinckley; late morning.

Had a look around  St Marys and the park.  On the park pool three  Moorhens and 11 Mallard.  

c120 Feral Pigeons around the Church and nearby town area.

A Peregrine on the aerial Mast preening.

18 Grey Squirrels in the Church area/path - obviously well fed!!!

Bittesby Country Park (afternoon)

A Kestrel hunting, a Buzzard, two Stonechats (male and female), a Jay and c25 Starlings flying around searching for food on the pastures.

10th Nov - rain from late morning until mid afternoon, then a little brighter, light SW, 12C

Lilbourne Meadows: late afternoon.

Definitely a 'goose' gathering today with c200 each Canada and Greylags.

Moire Wigeon than recently, c50, Teal 16 and  9 Mallard.

A Stonechat, a Little Egret, and hen Pheasant, a Meadow Pipit and Mute Swan.

A stag and hind Roe Deer.















9th Nov - high cloud, mostly light SW, 15C

WeBs count day around a number of pools/lakes.  However, waterbird numbers are quite low, presumably due to the mild autumn we have had so far.

At Bittesby Country Park a Little Grebe has taken up residency, hopefully more birds here at it matures.

At Mere Lane lake a few Redwings and Fieldfares.  On the lake 6 Little Grebes and 12 Tufted were notable.

Magna Park lake was quiet, but a Water Rail was heard.

Soar Brook Lake hosted many Lesser Black-backed Gulls, c250, plus Black-headed, Common and Herring., other waterbirds were few.  The usual green Woodpecker was around, plus a flock of Long-tailed Tits with a Goldcrest present.

At Stanford Hall lake (early afternoon), c40 Wigeon were feeding on the grass, along with 95 Canada and 33 Greylag Geese.  Distantly with some Canada Geese was the Cackling Goose, the same one as seen about a couple of weeks ago at Stanford Res.  It spent alot of time sleeping.

Very similar to recent visits, a single female Goldeneye was busy feeding.  Quite a few Redwings and Fieldfares around, many feeding along the river bushes ans pasture.

A great array of fungi along the path, both sides of it.

8th NOv - mostly broken cloud, light SW/W/13C

Stanford Res; morning

Not too much happening and little movement.   However, the record number of Great and Little Egrets are still here, I could see 10 Great Egrets in one view - brilliant.

There were quite a few Redwings and Fieldfares feeding along the river bushes at the outlet and on the pasture, plus a Jay.

Ash Tree Farm, Bitteswell; afternoon

A visit to this semi private area that has been developed in to a nature reserve, with wooded areas, old/wildflower meadows and a lake.  there was at least 100 Redwings feeding on berries.  Finches included Greenfinch, Chaffinch and Bullfinch (pr), a Green Woodpecker.

The meadows are very significant for fungi, especially waxcaps, some were found today.




A bird is roosting at times on the house, leaving plenty of pellets, probably a Tawny Owl.

Three Egyptian Geese, 48 Wigeon, plus Gadwall, Teal, Tufted and Mallard.

75 Stock Doves came in to roost in the spinney.

I checked the roost site, at the moment c1000 max are coming in to roost, hopefully this will build as the winter progresses as it has done in previous years.  .

Interestingly, others were seen flying to roost in a SW direction (into Warks), so there is another roost somewhere in that direction too.
