Soar Brook Lake; morning.

There was very little here, four Cormorants, a drake Teal and a Coot.

A single Greylag flew over, but worrying were two dead Greylags, which no doubt had bird flu.  Not good news here for the other wildfowl usually present.

Sunday, 15 February 2026

15th Feb - Rain until 1300h, then showers, light S, 7C

Another disappointing wet day, but at least the afternoon was bearable. However, birds are on the move and green shoots of Spring are appearing widely.

Shawell sandpit/landfill; afternoon

Duck numbers were low, 24 Teal, c 10 Mallard, c15 Tufted and 8 Gadwall.  Six Little Grebes and c100 Coot.

It seems that Common Gulls enjoy flying towards a Coot or Little Grebe, perhaps to steal food, only for the other bird to quickly dive out of the way.  It happened lots of times.

14 Red Kites, Ravens heard and 13 Lapwings.  A singing Song Thrush.

Stanford on Avon - monument field.

The monument field held a good flock of Canada and Greylag Geese and with them 35 Russian White-fronted Geese. Presumably the same ones which have spent their time in the vicinity of Stanford reservoir, but there must be some movement as numbers do vary a little.

14th Feb - Sunny, light S, 6C

Cottesbrooke; afternoon.

I checked an area where Crossbills have been appearing, we don't get too may in the midlands.  However, none were showing.  Nice to hear two Tawny Owls calling though.

On the way back popped in to see the Red-throated Diver, it was showing well, but not very active.  Again not too many of these linger inland.

Friday, 13 February 2026

Another very wet and unpleasant days weather.

Sunday, 8 February 2026

8th Feb - mostly high cloud, except showers occasionally, light SE/S, 10C

Rutland Water; afternoon.

Checked out the dam area, generally quiet, however I did get some decent views of the Red-necked Grebe which has been present a couple of days.

I also checked out the North Arm, there was certainly a perception that wildfowl numbers were lower then normally expected for February.  Fortunately a Black-necked grebe was present, although mostly asleep!

Otherwise the usual expected birds were seen around the site.

Saturday, 7 February 2026

7th Feb - light rain am un til, about m id-day, then a few short light showers pm, light SE, 10C

Lilbourne Meadows; afternoon.

I did pop down this morning, but the rain was miserable and on meeting Stuart, who had already had  a look around, he informed me there was not too much new about, except an Oystercatcher, so I decided to comeback straight after lunch.

I did find the Oystercatcher on the island pond with Lapwings. 70 Golden plovers were also in the area.  A Buzzard was around and a Kestrel hunting.

Around field flood pool I counted 48 Pied Wagtails.  Otherwise the other expected recently seen birtds.

Three Roe Deer feeding on the bank.

Stanford Res; afternoon.

When I arrived I could see there were some Geese on the water at the dam end.  On scanning through the Greylags and White-fronts I spotted four Tundra Bean Geese.   I got a couple of poor record digiscoped pics and then they were off.

Fortunately thy moved to the cereal field behind the dam area and I managed a few more pic before they walk over the brow out of view.

Three Mute Swans on the lake.   18 Goldfinches feeding/drinking nearby.

Monday, 2 February 2026

Sunday, 1 February 2026

1st Feb - Dull, misty, then occasional fine drizzle/light rain pm, very light SE, 9C

Shawell Sandpit/landfill; morning

My first spot was of two Green Sandpipers flying together low over the water and landing on the far bank.

It was too misty for the Red Kites to be doing much, eventually seven sat in the trees.

Two Green Woodpeckers were yaffling, against each other.

The Peregrine was again resting atop a works yard light.

Otherwise usual regulars were present.

Despite the dull-misty weather I digiscoped a Red Kite and the Peregrine.

Brandon marsh; afternoon.

A look here this afternoon for the Firecrest, but it seems to have moved on at the moment.  However, a Marsh Tit showed well.  With a Long-tailed Tit flock was a Chiffchaff.

On east marsh the expected Duck species (water level pretty high on the marsh).  A couple of Oystercatchers have made it back early for Spring.

A Great Egret flew in and started to search for food, before a Canada Goose took exception it it!
