31st March - cloud am, sunny periods pm, very light breeze, 16C

Lilbourne Meadows; evening.

Several Greylag and Canada Geese, one Canada on a nest.

Eight Lapwing, four Little Ringed Plovers, a Redshank and two Oystercatchers.

14 Wigeon, 27 Shovelers, plus Teal, Gadwall and Mallard.

Single LBB and Black-headed Gulls, two Common Gulls, A Kestrel flew over.











Monday, 30 March 2026

30th March - mostly cloudy, with a brisk, blustery NW developing during the day, 10C, but feeling cold again.

WIlley; 0830h - a Swallow over John M's stables again, as he reported on Saturday (28th).

Checking records back to 2011, I had a Swallow on March 30th in 2016, but the earlies was one on the 20th in 2014.

29th March - Sunny spells am, cloud increasing to wintry showers then light rain, cold blustery NW wind, 9C

Lilbourne Meadows; afternoon.

An Oystercatcher, Redshank and four Little Ringed Plovers.  Also, the Water Rail was showing again in the  same location on the field.

Nine Starling feeding, I think these are local breeders from the village.

Only two Wigeon spotted, plus Teal, Shovelers and Gadwall.

Stanford Reserevoir.

11 Swallows and two House Martins plus the odd Sand Martin around.

Six Goldeneye , one Goosander, eight Pochard, didn't spot any Wigeon in the areas I checked - could have been some at inlet end though, a single female Teal.

Two Oystercatchers on the dam, 20 Cormorants fishing as a group nearby.

A Blackcap was singing a little at the orchard corner.

28th March - Chilly night. Sunny spells, brick/blustery NW, 11C, but feeling cold. Wintery showers brief and widespread mid-afternoon.

Willey;  John M saw a Swallow at his about 1300h.

Lilbourne Meadows; morning.

Four Little Ringed Plovers, a couple of Lapwing, a Little Grebe and the usual, Ducks.
In the corner trees, several Goldfinches, a Greenfinch pair, a Goldcrest and CHiffchaff.

Shawell Sandpit; morning.

A drake Shelduck and female Egyptian Goose were new in.  35 Tufted Ducks, a few Teal, only a single Little Grebe spotted.  Two lapwings.
15 Ravens, only two Red Kites, a single Buzzard.


Stanford Reservoir; afternoon.

Most notable was the present of Swallows (6), Sand Martins (15) and a House Martin.

Five Goldeneye, and four female Goosanders.

Two Sparrowhawks together, looked like they were mating.

A male Grey Wagtail in the spillway and a Grey Heron near the overflow.

A single Peacock Butterfly was seen,

27th March - cloudy, light rain/drizzle at times, mod SW, 10C

Lilbourne Meadows; afternoon

Surprisingly, the Water Rail was again showing well and feeding on the pasture near the hedge as before.

Five Little Ringed Plovers were feeding next to the flood pools, along with a few Lapwing.
Notable reduction in Wigeon numbers since last visit, c 40.

The usual Ducks on the flood pools, plus a Mute Swan, and a single drake Tufted on the island pond, plus two Cormorants.

Three Oystercatchers were noted, a single Raven flew over hassled by the local Carrion Crows.

25th March - 6C, blustery-gusting strong NW, wintery brief frequent showers (rain/snow/hail) - feeling cold

Willey;  0800h, Two Red-legged Partridges in field adjacent o first Perkins field road gate.


Lilbourne Meadows; afternoon.

Two Little Ringed Plovers, five Lapwings, a Little Grebe,plus Ducks as yesterday.

I was fortunate to watch a Water Rail feeding in the grass field, sometimes 3-4 meters out from the hedge base.  Only my second site record in this area. 



Gulls included Black-head, Common, Herring and Lesser Black-backed, one of the latter was foraging on a dead Rabbit (it had a blue CR on that I am hoping to read video I took, here's a screen-shot from the video).

24th March - cloudy, SW wind increasing to fresh-gusting strong at times, 12 C

Lilbourne Meadows; afternoon.

A quick check of the field flood pools, my first site year records for Dunlin (2), Redshank (1) and Little Ringed Plover (2).

Also, 5 Lapwings, c80 Common Gulls, c10 Herring and c40 Lesser Black-backed. Plus c80 Wigeon, Shovelers, Teal and Gadwalls

23rd March - medium cloud, very luight breeze, 12C

Mere Lane Lake; morning

Four Little Grebes - lots of 'trilling' and territory disputes, five Tufted Ducks and two Mallards, five Coot and six Moorhens.

Mute Swan pair with nest.

A Green Woodpecker 'yaffling',  Chiffchaff singing.

Magna Park Lake area.

Two Little Grebes 'trilling' and in territory disputes, three drake Mallards, four Moorhens and a Coot.

Great Spotted Woodpecker 'drumming' and a Green Woodpecker 'yaffling'.  A Buzzard present in the trees..  Chiffchaff singing.

22nd March - 12C, sunny, very light breeze

Soar Brook Lake; morning

Last winter WeBs count today.

Grey heron2, Little Egret 1, Canada 20 and Greylag 16, Tufted 7, Mallard 5, Cormorant 7,  Moorhen 4, Mute Swan 2, Snipe 2 (feeding on waters edge bank), and Oystercatcher pair.

Also, a singing Red-legged Partridge, Stock Dove pair, Pheasant called, four Goldfinches feeding in tree tops, and a Buzzard calling.

21st March - Sunny, 14C, very light breeze, thin cloud at times.

Shawell Sandpit/Landfill area; morning.

Peregrine sitting atop works yard tall light.
Green Sandpiper feeding at water edge.  Six Little grebes, trilling heard.
Great Spotted Woodpecker 'drumming' and Green Woodpecker 'yaffling'.
Only three Red Kites seen.
c30 Tufted Duck, 11 Teal, c30 Coot.

Mute Swan 2, Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler, Gadwall and Mallard.  One Oystercatcher.
Plenty of Common Gulls again on the flood pools, plus a few Black-headed, Lesser Black-backed and Herring Gulls.

A Collared Dove singing in the corner trees, along with a Stock Dove and a Chiffchaff.

Three Small Tortoiseshells seen.

19th March - Grass frost last night. Sunny, 15C, very light SE.

Willey; 

Red Kite drifted over the village at 0800h.

Two Mistle Thrushes singing in the village area.

Soar Brook Lake, late morning.

21 Cormorants, four Wigeon and five Mallards, a Little Grebe.  

A  Little Grebe. 20 Canada and 12 Greylag Geese.

Two Ravens over and  a Green Woodpecker heard.

A Peacock butterfly.

18th March - Sunny, very warm 18C, mostly light SE

An exceptionally warm March day, alas busy 'lambing', but perfect for the little ones.

Ravens over first thing, doing the local fields circuit -  looking for 'fallen' stock. 

Several Brimstones noted.  

The local Song Thrush is singing really well and frequently now, and it looks like Blue Tits are using a garden nest box.

A per other recent Springs we have a pair of Canada Geese visiting the local ponds, will see if they breed this year.

Willey;  Raven heard over c0800h, Red Kite over 1200h.

Two Oystercatchers, still c200 Wigeon, six Tufted Ducks, also Shovelers, Gadwall and Teal, four Lapwings (breeders?)'

A Little Egret, two Grey Herons.  c70 Common Gulls on the field flood pools.

Several meadow Pipits and Skylarks present.

A Brimstone and single Roe Deer seen.

15th March - sunny spells, clouding over to light rain/heavy showers pm, mod-fresh/very brisk SW, 10C - but feeling cold

No White-fronted Geese found - most likely gone now.

Newton - 5 Arches Walk; afternoon.

Weather conditions were not very good, so most birds were in shelter.

It was quite noticeable the number of 'yellow' Spring wildflowers. should be good foe early Butterflies, etc.

14th March - Touch ground frost, then sunny, occasional short shower p, mod NW, 9C

Willey; 0800h, a flock c100 Starlings and c20 Fieldfare flew over west.

Shawell sandpit/landfill; afternoon.

Five Little Grebes, four Wigeon, two Gadwall, 26 Teal.
A Green Sandpiper and a male Grey Wagtail feeding at water edge.

Two, maybe three Buzzards, and c 15 Ravens, several of these were flying together in the breeze in display.









Stanford -on -Avon - No White-fronted Geese found today.

13th March - sunny spells, fresh breeze-mod, easing by evening, 9C

Willey; 1500h, a Red Kite over the fields to the east.

34 White-fronted Geese in the fields, plus a Mistle thrush pair.

Wigeon numbers seemed lower, but still Gadwall and Shoveler and a few Teal.
A female Kestrel was on a high  hedge perch.

11th March - a little rain during the night. Sunny spells, mod-fresh SW, 11C

Willey; at 1330h three Buzzards were have a territorial dispute over the village.

At 1530h c20 Fieldfares flew past low, generally southward.

Stanford-on-Avon.

1630h, I could only see 18 White-fronted Geese, toady in the Stanford Hall grounds, between lake and Hall. Nor, any found elsewhere, so we shall see if some have moved off.

10th March - sunny spells, mod SW, becoming fresh late, 12C

Willey; a male Kestrel flew past mid-afternoon.

33 White-fronted Geese on the monument field, five flew in from the Stanford Hall parkland.




Lilbourne Meadows.

c300 Wigeon and c15 Sho0velers, plus Teal and Gadwall.
c10 Common Gulls were very actively over the flood pools. Eight Lapwings were feeding.
Two Redwings and 14 Fieldfares were in the corner field tree.

9th March

32 White-fronted Geese counted in the fields.

Barn Owl heard 'hissing' in paddock are behind home, and then flying towards BH wood area

8th March - cloudy-grey, quite misty am, 8C, light E

Shawell Sandpit/landfill; morning.

A single Cormorant, fairly infrequent here. c 15 Redwings along lane hedge. 
Two Lapwings, Only three Red Kites about due to the poor the weather.
Green Woodpecker heard.
Usual other ducks and Gulls.

A great and Little Egret, plus a Grey Heron.
Plenty Wigeon plus Gadwall, three Goldeneye, two Teal, Pochards and Tuftieds.

37 White-fronted Geese were in the cereal field off the Cold Ashby road.

7th March - cloudy, light E, 7C

Lilbourne Meadows; morning

A single Roe deer was ambling through the reedbed area.

Several Skylark were singing and quite territorial. A single Meadow Pipit seen fly in to the grass.
A Kestrel hunting, a few Redwings around.

A Green Sandpiper feeding.  35 Red Kites circling togehrer.

A couple of Mute Swans and Shovelers.

 33 White-fronts in the monument fields, and two Great egrets over from Stanford hall lake area.

A Kingfisher flew over the dam and headed downstream.  A Grey Heron and Little Egret on the field flood pool.

Three Goldeney seen, plenmty of Wigeon still, plus Pochard and SHoveler.

6th March - cloudy, light E, 7C

About 1000h a Brimstone was spotted in the garden around Ivy, very active, my first Spring record.

4th March - cloud and mist only slowly clearing, a few sunny intervals pm, a chilly night, only warming to 11C by end of afternoon.

Willey; morning.

Several Greenfinches in the Church Yews and lane hedge, also 5 Goldfinches.  The now daily Red Kite over.
A Song Thrush singing a lot now. Green Woodpecker heard.

Stanford-on-Avon, afternoon.

23 White-fronts counted, but sure others were out of view in the field dips.
Three Mistle Thrushes feeding too.

Rather quiet.  A pair Grey Wagtails and a Pied Wagtail on the dam.
Five Goldeneyes seen (3 drakes), plenty of Wigeon on the water.

2nd March - sunny, mod-fresher at times, very mild pm, 16C

35 Russian White-fronted Geese present still.

At the lake island, two Grey Herons and one each of Little and Great Egret.


1st March - cloudy, mod W-SW, 12C

35 Russian White-Fronted Geese preset.

Lea Marston; afternoon.

Decided to go and twitch (find) the Hume's Warbler which has been along the river Tame since January.  It had not been seen when I got there since mid-morning and no one else was around. After much searching and having heard it three times I did find it, very active with Long-tailed Tits.  Impossible to get a photo though on this occasion.

Male and female Goosanders on the river, drake Gadwalls chasing a female and a Gren Woodpecker called.
