31st Aug - mostly cloudy, 19C mod/breezy SSW

Willey; early morning a Small Tortoiseshell was warming up on a wall.

Late morning 12 Mistle Thrush flew in to the Church area, some on to the large Yew tree and began eating berries. the Yew does not have too many berries on this year, so they won't be lasting too long at this rate.  about 40 Starling flew in to the trees too, before dashing off. 12 Pied Wagtails were feeding on the Sheep pasture. c18 Swallows were over the village feeding and 1 House Martin (c25 Swallows in the evening). Goldcrest and Chiffchaff were in the lane hedge.

Cotesbach landfill; an early look here, all the usual duck species present and 6 Little grebe still.  A Common Sandpiper was trying to find a place to land.  5 Red Kite were present.

Brandon Marsh; an afternoon visit here as it looked like rain was on the way.  The breeze was pretty keen at times and was keeping many birds in cover.  About 200 Lapwing were on the East Marsh along with Gadwall, Shoveler and Teal.  A single Snipo was feeding along the waters edge. A Green Sandpiper flew on to Teal Pool as did a Little Egret.  A Hobby dashed over low along the sheltered marsh side where Dragonfly were out.

Some butterflies were battling the breeze including Common Blue and Speckled Wood, plenty of other insects too.

Volucella inanis ?
