Cotesbach Landfill; a first site record this morning of a drake Red-crested Pochard. Also spotted a Common Sandpiper, presumably the one seen during last month, will it stay the winter?
Stanford reservoir; interestingly 3 Red-crested Pochards were present today, so it seems there was some movement of this species last night. Four Goldeneye but no other new wildfowl were seen here today. A couple of Little Grebe were near the main reed bed heading towards the west end.
Five Bullfinch were together in the bushes, they flew right to the top of a tall willow to feed before returning to the bushes. On the adjacent arable field 22 Stock Doves and a few Woodpigeon were feeding. A cock Pheasant was strutting and displaying.
At the main feed station Blue, Great and a Coal Tit, plus a few Tree Sparrows. A good number of Redwings and fewer Fieldfare were feeding on the Hawthorn bushes around the reservoir. A Great-spotted Woodpecker was heard calling.
At dusk Starling started to come to roost, the murmuration is always great to watch. Difficult to say exactly how many, I estimated 3000-5000 came in.
