This maybe the last hot day and remnants of a hurricane head towards the UK over the Atlantic and  hopefully will bring some very urgently needed rain  - enough scorched earth weather!

Willey;

Waited for the Black Redstart to come to roost, but didn't see it this evening.

Four Buzzards were 'playing' in the wind over the bank.  Two Kestrels hunting and a Red Kite over.

Saturday, 23 August 2025

23rd Aug - mostly cloudy, very light variable breeze, 22C

Willey; 0815h, a male Redstart on the top fence line.

At 1900h, per chance I caught sight of the Black Redstart rapidly flying to to it's roosting shed.  I'll have to stake it out, but it disappears so quickly.  Nor can I find it around the village during the day, its now very elusive.

A female Blackcap in the corner hedge with Tits.

22 Aug - mostly cloudy, light NE, 20C

A bird dashed out of a shed about 0800h, it may well have been the Black Redstart.  This is where it has been going to roost.

A female type Redstart still on top fence line first thing.

Three Common Sandpipers seen and two Black Terns over the main water, with a few Common Terns.

A couple of Shoveler, two Red Kites over.

Shawell Sandpit; late evening

I checked for the Ferruginous Duck, but was not able to be sure as many Tufted females were asleep on the water and the light was fading.

Interestingly I had my highest, ever, Little Grebe count of 29.  Clearly, the main pit is much to their liking at the moment. I expect a few more could be found hidding away!

13th Aug - Hit, sunny, cloudy/hazy sun evening, 30C, light/mod S/SW

Willey; A Blackbird has bean gathering food for nestlings the lat few days, I'm sure this excessive heat will affect the food available and the young's survival.

2000h - I just caught sight of the Black Redstart briefly on the roof ridge before it slipped in to the shed again.  It doesn't hang around.

Lilbourne Meadows; evening.

Willey;
The Black redstart spent ca minute on the roof at 0700h, before flying off, again could not be relocated.

1100h, a Red Kite circling over the fields to the east of village.

As it was rather a dull evening I decided to stake out the yard area at 2000h, in fact the Black Redstart was already sitting on the shed door.  Very gingerly and peeking over a car I snapped some record shots, over exposed, but better than nothing!  It disappeared in to the shed to roost again.

Lilbourne Meadows; evening

Fairly quiet, but a Snipe feeding was a surprise.  Also a single Teal, two Gadwall, c20 lapwing, several Stock Doves and a Kestrel.

A Sparrowhawk flew into cover, and a Green Woodpecker was nearby.  Black-headed and Lesser Black-backed Gulls dropping in for a drink and bathe.

Plenty of Dragonflies, but Butterflies thin on the ground due to lack of thriving flowers in this dry, hot period.

Common Sandpiper on the dam, two Shovelers and juv Little Grebe plus the regulars.

I did a butterfly count here too, which included a Small Copper, but the best was three Clouded Yellow that flew over the hedge from the field chasing each other, they disappeared, so I explored the field margin and found them again, but very active and the breeze didn't help, managed a pic though.

Friday, 8 August 2025

8th Aug - sunny, 25C, light SW

Willey; 0705h, the Black Redstart left the roost (and a few House Sparrows), was very briefly on the rear roof, then driveway before dashing off over the houses.

Unexpectedly, I looked in the yard at 2055h, and it was on a shed door, flying up inside as if catching food from the roof area, and back to the door.  I grabbed my camera and got two rapid pictures.  It flew back in to the shed and that was it!
