Fosse Meadows - I visited here during the afternoon, although I expected it to be rather busy with walkers and dogs It is a good place to catch up with meadow and hedge butterflies. There were plenty of the commoner species about, on a large Buddliea there were 6+ Red Admirals, Small Tortoiseshell, Comma and Wall/Meadow Brown. Large Skipper were also seen. A little quite in the bird scene but a Whitethroat, Chiffchaff, Song Thrush were singing. At the lake area Reed Bunting, Willow Warbler, a Goldfinch family, a couple of Swallows and single Sand Martin were seen. A Great-spotted Woodpecker was heard to call and several Swifts flew overhead.
Wolvey wetland area; I then popped to this area as used to hold Spotted Flycatchers. I had a look around but did not see or hear any, will have to try again. Overhead ~10 House Martins and a couple of Swallows. In the Church yard 6+ Blackbirds were feeding on berries on trees that border the road. There were eating them and taking them to youngsters, much activity. Will have to find out what the tree species is. At the pool I caught sight of a smallish rodent but it dissapered too quickly, maybe a Water Vole. The usual Dragonflies and Butterflies were out on the very warm afternoon.
Also, I visited a location where a Quail had been heard for several days. Luckily it was still calling and as I stood by the gate it came very close, but hidden by the grass. Still, great to hear one, there has not been many in the U.K. this summer.
Stanford reservoir, popped in this evening, very pleasant summers evening. The Grasshopper Warbler was 'reeling' again. Waders included a Black-tailed Godwit, Greenshank, a Little- ringed Plover and 3 Green Sandpiper.
