5th June - sunny spells, light short showers, mod-breezy NW, 14C

Shawell lagoons; this evening most notable was a Shelduck (female) and Green Woodpecker calling.  With a good edge waders are hoped for but nothing doing yet.

Cotesbach landfill; The Shelduck pair and ducklings were present still, only seven ducklings now (from 9), but growing well so getting less vulnerable each day.  The Oystercatcher and Egyptian Geese pairs were also present.  I spotted teo Little Grebe an adult and well grown juv on the water, then three further Little Grebe further away near the Shelduck.  The female Shelduck didn't appreciate these being close to the ducklings and chased them off.  Similarly, the other two were close to a Coots nest and was chased off.  Their tactic is to dive and appear some way off, but not always far enough.

Plenty of House and Sand Martins again feeding here, plus a few Swifts. SIngle Red Kite and Buzzard seen.
