8th Sept - a touch of ground frost last night. Sunny, very light NW, 17C

Willey; about 1700h the Swallows had gathered on the wires, tricky to count as the changed places but at least 120.  Most were juveniles, some very young one, no doubt heading south steadily in family groups.  Probably a few juv House Martins too, but I could not look at each individual bird.

Stanford reservoir; the afternoon here.  A couple of Spotted Flycatchers were along the waters edge feeding near the Fishermen's point.  Further along a mixed Tit flock, with Goldcrest, 2 Nuthatch, several Chiffchaffs, Whitethroat and Blackcap were in the bushes. I bet other warblers were present too if they could have be seen deep in cover.  A couple of juv Goldfinch feeding on Thistle seeds.  Two Great-spotted Woodpeckers were in dispute and flew off together.

A Common Sandpiper, 6 Grey Wagtails and several Pied Wagtails were in the spillway. Near or on the dam 2 Pochard (drakes), 4 Teal, a Gadwall, many Grey Lag and Canada Geese.

A few Butterflies and a good number of Dragonflies were about, including this female Southern Hawker.
